An Garda Síochána has declared the upcoming visit of US President Donald Trump an extraordinary event, mobilising more than 10,000 12-hour tours of duty across Ireland from 11 to 13 September 2026.

The scale of the policing operation, described by the force as one of the largest in its history, includes major traffic restrictions, rolling road closures on the M50 motorway, and heightened security surrounding key transport hubs and official venues in Dublin and County Clare.

Gardaí confirmed that rolling closures on the M50 will particularly affect the section between Junction 3 at the M1 interchange and Junction 6 near Blanchardstown and Castleknock. The highest traffic impact on the motorway is anticipated between 8am and 9am on Saturday, when the presidential motorcade travels toward Dublin, and between 12pm and 1pm as the entourage transfers toward the airport for travel to Shannon.

Dublin Airport and Shannon Airport have both advised air passengers to allow significant extra journey time due to potential perimeter road restrictions, additional security checkpoints, and temporary road closures. In Dublin, perimeter routes including the Old Airport Road, R108, and R132 face localized traffic management measures, with the Old Airport Road operating on a one-way system heading east towards Swords.

In the capital, Phoenix Park has been closed to all vehicles and pedestrians from Thursday night through Saturday to facilitate meetings involving President Catherine Connolly and Taoiseach Micheál Martin. Gardaí noted that city centre business will continue as normal, while peaceful public protests planned in central Dublin around lunchtime will be facilitated.

Following his engagements in Dublin, Mr. Trump is scheduled to travel to his resort in Doonbeg, County Clare, where the Irish Open golf tournament is taking place over the weekend. The multi-agency security operation involves frontline uniform officers, armed support, specialized counter-drone units, public order personnel, and assistance from the Irish Defence Forces.
