A 17-year-old youth has been sentenced to 11 years in prison with the final three years suspended for his role in the murder of 44-year-old postman Barry Daly outside his home in Doneraile, County Cork.

Sitting at the Central Criminal Court in Cork on Friday, Ms Justice Siobhán Lankford handed down the sentence, which results in an effective eight-year custodial term for the juvenile, who cannot be identified under legal provisions protecting minors. A second juvenile, aged 16, was sentenced to two and a half years' imprisonment with six months suspended after pleading guilty to manslaughter for a lesser role in the killing.

The sentencing concludes court proceedings following the conviction a fortnight ago of 21-year-old Alex Deady, of Glenview, Convent Road, Doneraile, who was sentenced to mandatory life imprisonment for murder after being described by the judge as the "undoubted instigator" of the fatal violence.

The court heard that Mr Daly, a father of five, was beaten to death with a golf club outside his home at Rockview Terrace, Doneraile, in the early hours of October 12, 2025. The attack followed altercations outside a public house on a night when the town was celebrating a local hurling championship victory. Prosecutors stated that the three co-accused launched an "armed retaliatory expedition" after Mr Daly struck Deady's partner outside the pub during a brawl, though accounts differed on whether the contact was accidental or deliberate.

In her sentencing remarks, Ms Justice Lankford noted that the 17-year-old had retrieved weapons and assaulted a bystander who attempted to defuse the conflict before following Mr Daly home. The judge observed that the youth had at least half an hour during which he could have reflected and stopped, treating his failure to disengage as an aggravating factor. She also highlighted the devastation caused to Mr Daly's family and the wider Doneraile community, describing the postman as a highly regarded figure in his local area.
