A 16-year-old boy has appeared before the Dublin Children's Court charged with motor vehicle theft and multiple counts of dangerous driving after repeatedly driving against oncoming traffic on Dublin roads, including the M50, and colliding with garda patrol cars.

The court appearance follows a managed containment operation conducted by Gardaí from the Mountjoy and Blanchardstown Traffic Units on Thursday evening, 17 September. Investigations had commenced earlier in the week after a Toyota car was reported stolen from the Coolock area of north Dublin in the early hours of Wednesday, 16 September.

Court proceedings heard evidence from Garda Seán Power, who detailed that during the operation, the vehicle was observed being driven dangerously against traffic across several areas, including Finglas, Whitehall, and Ballymun. It was alleged that the youth drove the wrong way up a slip road at Junction 5 of the M50, where he collided with a civilian vehicle, before continuing along the M1. The drive ended on Swords Road near the M1 and R132 junction, where the car was brought to a controlled stop after colliding with two garda patrol vehicles.

Garda Power objected to bail during the court hearing, citing the gravity of the allegations and concerns regarding court attendance. The court heard that no injuries were reported as a result of the collisions. Due to ongoing industrial action by solicitors in relation to legal aid reforms, the minor was unrepresented during the sitting but was accompanied by his father. Judge Patricia Cronin presided over the hearing.

A second teenager arrested in connection with the incident was released from custody without charge, pending the preparation of a file for the Garda Youth Diversion Programme. Under Irish law governing juvenile proceedings, the 16-year-old defendant cannot be publicly identified.
