Irish fast-food chain Supermac's has lodged a formal planning objection with Galway City Council against a proposed Starbucks drive-through coffee shop at Galway Shopping Centre on Headford Road. In its submission, the company raised concerns over traffic congestion, parking disruption, and potential negative commercial impacts on its nearby existing restaurant and drive-through outlet.

The planning application was submitted by Dublin-registered firm Atercin Liffey Unlimited, which operates numerous Starbucks franchise locations across Ireland. The applicant is seeking permission to construct a single-storey drive-through hatch to the rear elevation of an existing coffee shop unit within the shopping centre. The plans also involve reconfiguring pedestrian pathways, car parking spaces, and establishing a new vehicle circulation route and collection point near Supermac's existing operations.

In its submission to local authority planners, Supermac's Ireland Limited argued that adding another drive-through hatch in the area would exacerbate severe traffic issues on Headford Road. The company further contended that the proposed development would create an "adverse impact" on its adjacent restaurant and drive-through business.

The planning application has also drawn broader community opposition. Transport advocacy group Galway Commuter Coalition launched an online petition opposing the project, which gathered over 2,500 signatures. Opponents argued that the facility would increase traffic at a heavily congested junction and promote car dependency near the city centre. Galway City Council is expected to deliver a decision on the application in October.
