Social Democrats leader Holly Cairns will miss her party's annual think-in and the resumption of Dáil Éireann after receiving medical advice to rest at home during her pregnancy.

The Cork South-West TD, who is expecting her second child in early November with partner Barry Looney, was advised by doctors to refrain from traveling for a number of weeks. The party confirmed the decision ahead of its annual gathering in Dublin, where members are meeting to set priorities for the upcoming parliamentary term.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the Social Democrats confirmed that Cairns had originally planned to commence maternity leave in October. The spokesperson stated that she hopes to return to Leinster House in the coming weeks if medical advice permits, though any attendance will depend on updated doctor recommendations.

Social Democrats deputy leader Cian O'Callaghan is expected to assume the role of acting party leader during Cairns's maternity leave, repeating the leadership arrangement implemented following the birth of her first child in late 2024.

The Dáil resumes sittings on Wednesday following the summer recess, with political parties preparing key strategic positions ahead of the upcoming national budget scheduled for October 6.
