A 25-year-old man from County Clare has appeared before Ennis District Court charged with an organised crime offence following his extradition from the United Kingdom.

Jake Hannam, with an address at Purcell Park, Shannon, is charged under Section 72 of the Criminal Justice Act with participating in the attempted murder of Daniel Harty for a criminal organisation or its members between January 17 and January 18, 2020, at an location within the State.

Giving evidence of arrest, charge, and caution, Detective Garda Roddy Burke told the court that he was involved in the extradition of Mr Hannam following his arrest in the UK on foot of a European arrest warrant issued in December 2023. Det Garda Burke stated that he arrested Mr Hannam at 1:25pm on September 2 at Casement Aerodrome in Baldonnel before conveying him to Shannon Garda Station, where he was formally charged at 5:30pm that evening. Mr Hannam made no reply after caution.

Judge Adrian Harris assigned legal aid to solicitor Stiofán Fitzpatrick. Mr Fitzpatrick confirmed that no application for bail was being made, as the District Court was not the appropriate venue for such an application. Sergeant John Burke informed the court that the Director of Public Prosecutions had directed trial by indictment.

Judge Harris remanded the accused in custody to appear again before Ennis District Court on September 9 via video-link.

Following the District Court hearing, Mr Hannam was brought to a special sitting of Ennis Circuit Court in connection with two bench warrants issued in April 2021. State Solicitor for Clare Aisling Casey told the court the warrants related to separate allegations dating to 2019 and 2020 concerning assault causing harm and threats to kill in Shannon.

Judge Alec Gabbett remanded Mr Hannam in custody to Limerick Prison to appear at Ennis Circuit Court on September 15.
