Nine prisoners at Midlands Prison in Portlaoise, County Laois, received medical care following a cluster of drug overdoses on Friday, September 18. The Irish Prison Service confirmed that three of the affected inmates required hospitalisation for further care, while six others were treated within the prison's medical facilities.

The Irish Prison Service stated that it is working closely with the Health Service Executive to manage the medical response and monitor the health of those involved. The cluster of medical emergencies follows reports of recent drone activity in the area dropping contraband into the prison grounds.

In response to the incident, prison authorities have implemented heightened security measures across the facility. Staff have increased the frequency of daily random and intelligence-led cell searches, and the service's canine unit has expanded search operations with a specific focus on incoming prison deliveries.

An information initiative has also been launched within the facility to warn prisoners about the severe health risks associated with consuming illicit substances. The Irish Prison Service reiterated its commitment to preventing contraband from entering correctional facilities, citing ongoing cooperation with An Garda Síochána and investment in security technologies. Authorities encouraged anyone with information about contraband smuggling to use the confidential prison reporting channels.
