Gardaí have arrested and charged a man in his 60s following a public order incident involving Taoiseach Micheál Martin on the opening day of the National Ploughing Championships in Screggan, County Offaly.

The incident occurred shortly after 12:00 pm on Tuesday near Tullamore, where political figures and attendees had gathered for the national agricultural showcase. Gardaí confirmed that no injuries were reported as a result of the encounter.

Following the incident, the man was taken to a Garda station in County Offaly, where he was formally charged under the Public Order Act. He has since been released from custody and is expected to appear before a sitting of the District Court at a later date.

Gardaí stated that investigations into the incident remain ongoing. The National Ploughing Championships, taking place across three days in County Offaly, draw over a quarter of a million visitors annually and feature appearances by senior government members.
