An Garda Síochána and the Defence Forces Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team have launched an investigation following the discovery of a suspicious package addressed to U.S. Customs and Border Protection at Shannon Airport.

The alarm was raised at approximately 10:30am on 25 August after the package was identified at the County Clare facility. Following an initial assessment, emergency response protocols were initiated, and the parcel was contained and relocated to a safe area so that routine airport operations were not affected.

A Garda spokesperson confirmed that officers are conducting inquiries to establish the identity and location of the sender. Bomb disposal experts from the Defence Forces attended the scene, made the package safe, and handed the matter over to investigating gardaí for technical examination.

A spokesperson for the Shannon Airport Group declined to comment further on the specifics of the security alert, stating that it would be inappropriate to do so while a Garda investigation remains active. Shannon Airport houses a full U.S. Customs and Border Protection pre-clearance facility, which allows passengers to clear American customs and immigration processes prior to departure.
