Shane Halpin, a commercial cucumber grower from North County Dublin, has been named the 2026 FBD Young Farmer of the Year at an awards ceremony held at The Heritage Hotel in Killenard, County Laois, on Tuesday, September 8.

Halpin's victory marks the first time a candidate from Dublin has taken the competition's top honor in its 28-year history. Running Welgro Produce alongside his business partner, Halpin was also awarded the 'Other Enterprises' category title during the ceremony.

Halpin launched Welgro Produce in 2021 on a leased three-acre nursery. The enterprise has expanded across multiple sites in North County Dublin, including the purchase of an additional nursery facility in 2023, bringing its growing area to seven acres. The company supplies fresh Irish-grown cucumbers to retail, wholesale, and food service clients between March and November. Welgro currently employs 10 full-time staff members, expanding to 35 seasonal workers during peak harvesting periods.

Organised by rural youth organization Macra na Feirme in partnership with FBD Insurance and the Irish Farmers' Association (IFA), the annual competition recognizes young agricultural entrepreneurs under 35 years of age across Ireland. As overall winner, Halpin receives a €5,000 cash prize along with vouchers from FBD Insurance and the FBD Hotel Group.

Several other category winners were recognized during the event:

- Charlie Smyth of County Cavan was named runner-up and took the Drystock category award. - Enda Armstrong of County Galway won the Dairy category. - Patrick Breslin of County Cavan received the Career Farm Management award. - Liam Barton of County Laois was awarded the Land Mobility award. - Joanne Cushen of County Kilkenny received the Skillnet Biodiversity Award. - Carina McElchar of County Donegal took home the Best Young Entrant title.

Finalists were evaluated through individual interviews with an independent judging panel focusing on technical efficiency, financial performance, environmental sustainability, and enterprise management.
