Taoiseach Micheál Martin has confirmed that the rent tax credit will be increased in the upcoming Budget 2027, scheduled for October 6.

Speaking to reporters in Dublin ahead of a Cabinet meeting on Monday, Mr Martin described the tax relief as a positive measure for tenants and confirmed that the coalition intends to expand it. He added that the primary concern remains ensuring that all eligible renters claim the benefit, noting that some individuals have not yet drawn it down.

The announcement comes as Housing Minister James Browne lobbies for a €300 increase to the value of the credit. First introduced in 2022, the tax relief currently stands at a maximum of €1,000 per year for an individual renter or €2,000 for couples who are jointly assessed for tax.

Tánaiste and Minister for Finance Simon Harris said he is positively disposed to enhancing the credit, citing the ongoing need to assist households with high rental costs. However, Mr Harris declined to comment on specific figures while bilateral negotiations continue between spending ministers ahead of Budget Day.

In addition to housing tax relief, the government is examining potential measures regarding energy and fuel excise relief as final spending allocations are settled.
