Former Ireland and Munster out-half Ronan O'Gara has signed a four-year contract extension to remain head coach of French rugby union club Stade Rochelais until June 2031.

The 49-year-old former international, who first joined the Maritime club in 2019 before taking over as overall head coach in 2021, was entering the final year of his existing contract. The extension commits his long-term future to the French Top 14 side following weeks of speculation regarding his next career move.

During his tenure at Marcel-Deflandre, O'Gara led La Rochelle to consecutive Investec Champions Cup titles in 2022 and 2023, defeating Leinster on both occasions in the European finals. Under his leadership, the team also reached two Top 14 finals in 2021 and 2023.

In a statement released by Stade Rochelais, O'Gara expressed pride in extending his stay with the club, stating that he and his family are happy in La Rochelle and that he remains convinced the team's best performances lie ahead.

The long-term agreement effectively rules out a near-term return to Irish domestic or international coaching roles, cementing O'Gara's position at the helm of the French club as he aims to secure La Rochelle's first-ever Top 14 league title.
