Irish broadcaster Classic Hits Radio has removed Ed Sheeran’s music from its broadcast playlists for the foreseeable future following listener feedback surrounding the removal of American rapper Macklemore from Sheeran's North American tour.

The controversy developed after Macklemore made statements in support of Gaza during a concert at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. The rapper was subsequently dropped from the remainder of Sheeran's tour dates, a decision Sheeran publicly stated was made by tour promoters rather than by him personally.

Following Macklemore's departure, all remaining supporting acts on the tour withdrew in protest. Among those pulling out in solidarity were Irish singer Aaron Rowe and traditional music group Beoga, as well as American musician Finneas.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Classic Hits Radio said it had received feedback from listeners expressing concern and disappointment regarding the events surrounding the tour. The station acknowledged Sheeran's explanation regarding promoter decisions, but stated that it felt removing his music was the appropriate step given listener sentiment and the actions taken by Irish artists.

Dave Kelly, group programme director at Bay Broadcasting—which operates Classic Hits Radio along with Radio Nova, Sunshine 106.8, and Galway Bay FM—said the decision was carefully considered and not intended as a personal judgment on Sheeran. Kelly stated that radio stations must listen to their audience and stand alongside local artists, adding that the removal of Sheeran's tracks will apply specifically to Classic Hits Radio and remain under review.
